Mathematicians at Work
Math is integrated all throughout our learning with our morning routines, situations throughout the day, and during our closing routines.  For the first few weeks we explore our Math Tubs-tools that help us better understand things we're learning in math.  We begin with unifix cubes, then pattern blocks, attribute blocks, color tiles, multilink cubes, geoboards, and links.  After the children have had lots of time to discover and get comfortable with materials, we use them to discover and learn about different math concepts such as number sense, sorting, measurement, patterning, simple operations, geometry/spatial sense, and collecting/displaying data (graphing).  We also have "junk" boxes created from household "junk" (rocks, shells, buttons, etc.) and "fancy" boxes created with small erasers and toys (U.S. Toys and Oriental Trading rock!).  Throughout our year we discover, learn, and expand our understanding of many important math concepts.  Check back regularly for tips on how you can "make math" in your home!
