Greeting/Goodbye Rituals
From Conscious Discipline by Dr. Becky Bailey
Greeting/Goodbye rituals are the way you say open and close the day together as a school family.  It can be a simple, "Good morning, glad you're here!" or more elaborate with special handshakes, sayings, etc.  Below are some other ideas to get you started...

Greeting Apron
(Adapted from Dr. Jean by Sarah Simpson)
This apron is worn by the teacher to greet children with at the door.  It has 2-4 felt cutouts that symbolize several different greetings.  The children choose how they would like to be greeted.  A hand cutout is a handshake; a heart cutout is a hug; a number 5 cutout is a hi-five; and a smiley face cutout is a simple smile and verbal greeting.  You can use a simple hip apron from a craft store or sew something more elaborate-attach the cutouts with hot glue or stitchwitchery.  You can also use velcro to change greetings with your theme or the season.  One of my children's favorites was a mitten cut out that symbolized a "warm hand hug" for those chilly Florida mornings! :)  We also used a crayon cut out where they would choose something for me to "draw" on their hand or face-a little more time consuming but a wonderful way to connect!

Goodbye Apron
Some teachers use the back of their Greeting apron and just reverse it at the end of the day.  You can also create a separate apron to use.  Goodbye choices can be the same as Greeting choices or you can adapt to other choices-one teacher had a cut out of an alligator for "See you later, alligator!" and a bear cut out for a "bear hug."
