Be the STAR You Are!!

These pictures were taken during the June 2004 institute-this was my second time attending and it was just as awesome as the first...  For more information on attending, visit this link:

Dr. Becky Bailey in Action!

Getting Funky!

Presenter:  Elizabeth Montero-Cefalo
PreK ESE Teacher   Miami, Florida

Elizabeth uses this cube during Circle Time with a wonderful little chant.  Whatever the cube displays (S.T.A.R., Balloon, Drain, I Love You Ritual) is what the children do.  Loved this!!

This is a visual aid for each part of her "Brainsmart Start"

These are used with and in the Safe Place...

This is a Safe Place pass-it's used as a visual cue to a child that he/she should use the Safe Place

Elizabeth created interactive cards with the "I Love You Rituals" and leaves them in a tub by her classroom door.  When families come in, they are very accessible for a quick teaching moment with the family and child!

The "Acts of Kindness" Board-the Kindness Reporter puts up a flower for every helpful act noticed in the classroom

Presenter:  Vicky Hepler
Kindergarten Teacher     Orlando, Florida

Vicky's school family's name is the "Buddy Bears"-here is their "Ways to Be Helpful" book

This is one of the first class books Vicky's children make-they decorate a child shaped figure on one side and their name with a name song.

A substitute manual written by the children full of important things to know about their school family...

Vicky uses the "I Love You Rituals" as an integral part of her literacy program.  The children not only participate in the rituals, they read them from pocket charts, song charts, and illustrate them in take home books like the one above...

Another class book to build the school family...

Vicky's Safekeeper Box

Vicky uses the book, The Kissing Hand, to introduce rituals to her families.  "Chester" (the main character) notices kind and helpful acts...  She uses an adorable racoon puppet too...

Vicky's children complete this STAR cut-out to share about themselves and their families

Vicky's kids decorate a body-shaped puzzle piece-
"We're All in This Together!"

Vicky's Safe Place sign-just thought it was too cute not to get a picture of!

Part of Vicky's school family's "Goodbye Ritual" is a remembering book.  Each child helps to complete by recording their favorite part of their time together...

A class book using alliteration:  "Vivacious Vicky!"

Presenter:  Wendy Berringer
3rd Grade Teacher      Stuart, Florida

Although I didn't get to see Wendy's presentation, she was so gracious in sharing her ideas and all her stuff!  These are wonderful way to bring Conscious Discipline into upper grade classrooms.  Many teachers feel CD can't be adapted for upper grades-Wendy proves it absolutely can be done, and done so well!!

More Ideas...
(These were on display throughout our week-I've tried to give full credit where it's due!!
Email me if I've missed something!

Safe Place Ideas

Various ideas-posters and visuals with clip art and photographs of the kids doing the stressbuster activities

Vicky Hepler's Time Machine

Made from a plastic tablecloth-the kids start on either side and follow the steps (literally) and use the words at each step.  They end in the middle with some way of connection-hug, handshake, smile, etc.

Katja Von Elbe's BEAUTIFUL
"Acts of Kindness" Board

We added a heart for every kind act noted-the tree was full by the end of each day!!

More of Katja's brilliance...a holiday ritual book-she wrapped a huge box and the kids role played opening each other up-here's the book to accompany!  The last page was a mirror...

A Stressbuster Visual-pick one for the day!

Katja designed this to give a visual communicative tool in the Safe Place-loved this!!

This was fabulous!!  A portable job tool kit!  The jobs are labeled on the side with pictures of the job, the child's photograph beside it, and a job pin to wear.  In the drawers are all the tools the children need to do their jobs.  I didn't get the name of this brilliant teacher but would love to!!!  This was one of my favorites-especially for those of us in Florida who are struggling to find ways to meet fire safety standards limiting our wall space!
